The use of networked lighting control systems to manage the energy and convenience of lighting in the commercial market continues to gain steam. In fact, according to Navigant Research’s recent “Market Data: Intelligent Lighting Controls” report, revenue from networked lighting control systems across all commercial building types is expected to grow at 14.3% annually between 2017 and 2026.
But beyond energy savings, more end users are taking advantage of networked lighting controls as a strategic business advantage — improving areas such as employee health, motivation, and productivity.
A study conducted by the American Society of Interior Design found that 68% of employees complain about the lighting situation in their offices. Often this relates to lighting being too harsh or too dim — causing eye strain and even triggering migraine headaches. In industries where competition for talent is intense, companies are finding that environments that anticipate and ease employee concerns can have a strategic recruiting advantage.
In addition, numerous studies reveal the productivity benefits of appropriate lighting. Natural daylight consistently translates into the highest productivity levels — highlighting the importance of building designs with plenty of windows and lighting controls that are optimized to take advantage of fluctuating daylight levels.
But beyond natural daylight, other studies show that installed lighting can impact productivity as well. One famous case in the late 1980s was at the US Post Office in Reno, Nevada. The lighting systems were renovated to make them more worker-friendly, and this resulted in energy savings of about $50,000 per year. But the most dramatic improvement came from worker productivity. Mail sorters in the facility became the most productive sorters in the western half of the country, machine operators boasted the lowest error rates, and the productivity savings worked out to over $500,000 per year.
